During fall 2013 for the month of November, MSA organized a project feed for about 200 individuals for the Sacramento homeless community. At this event, students from UC Davis helped make sandwiches at the Islamic Center of Davis and these sandwiches were handed out to the homeless individuals all over Sacramento area. All the money raised for the project feed was raised from bake sales and da'wah table donations at UC Davis.
Co-sponsored by the University of California Berkeley MSA, University of the Pacific MSA and Cosumnes River College MSA -- it was an evening of beautifully inspiring, emotional and thought-provoking poetry.
Sajad Shakoor, a native of Lodi, grew up around gang violence and the over-arching eye of the local police. Growing up a Pakistani-American Muslim in a predominantly Latino area, Shakoor faced challenges of peer pressure and social acceptance which lead him to join a local gang in his teenage years. He was then implicated in a false charge and sentenced to 15 years in jail. While in jail, Shakoor worked towards his bachelor's and master's degrees to follow his passion for seeking knowledge and education. Today, he is a registered physical therapist and helps mentor detained youth and empower them to pursue higher education.
Shakoor's mission in life is to tell his story and reach out to youth and adults alike in order to help them free themselves from the shackles of peer pressure and lead productive, active lives.
A night of beautiful nasheeds, poetry by MSA members, entertaining videos, guest speakers, and activities for all to enjoy!
